Producing quality, original content is a difficult challenge for any website owner or content writer. As we know, providing original content that imparts value to the reader is an essential way to build traffic to a website and promote commercial products or services. But writing good content is hard enough. How do we continually come up with good topics to write about?

One method I've found to be highly effective is journaling. I keep a 6x9 steno book and pen with me virtually everywhere I go - it's next to the bed at night, in the car on the way to the store, and on the desk as I write this article. I use the journal as a single place to collect my thoughts and hash out new ideas. And not just article topics either. I write down ideas for new websites I want to design, philosophical breakthroughs I've had (usually after too much coffee), and other random thoughts that drift in and out of my head throughout the day.

These floating ideas that come to mind at various points in a given day have an enormous amount of value. Before the journal they would come to me as an epiphany, flesh themselves out as full formed ideas, and if I was in the middle of another task (like mowing the lawn or taking a shower) I would promptly forget about them. The same thing happens with my dreams. Once I started keeping the journal, however, I was quickly able to build a backlog of solid article and business ideas to keep me going during any significant period of writer's block.

Not only is the journal a life-saving tool as a source for inspiration, but it can also help to weed out ideas that aren't up to par. Nothing separates a good idea from a bad one like seeing it on paper.

I recommend the journaling tactic for any writer who is expected to produce something original on a regular basis, and even to non-writers. The more I use it, the more I'm finding that a lot of my previously wasted thoughts were really worthwhile. In the flood of ideas that come to us has day in and day out, it's nice to have a reservoir where the most creative can wait their turn to be actioned on.
