Traditionally if you wanted to advertise you would contact your local newspaper or magazine and get an advert in the paper.  The problem with this is that many people are generally reading a newspaper catching up on the day’s events or looking through a magazine as the subject is a hobby of theirs, or they are reading the latest in celebrity gossip.

This makes it often a waste of time to advertise in a magazine or news paper. In here you might convert 1 in 100 people into a business lead, where as with search engine marketing you could be looking to convert 10 in 100, or if done properly even more.

The theory behind this is if somebody types something into a search engine, they are doing just that – searching out information. If you can get these people right when they are ready to commit to a purchase they you will be pounds in, even if you get them to sign up for something before they leave you site if they are just looking for information you can then continually market to them so they get to know your business and by the time they are ready to committing to buying your company will be at the forefront of their mind.

So advertising in your local newspaper is not all that cost effective when you compare it to the web. With internet marketing you can track where your visitors came from with some simple analytics software, how are you to know if someone responded to your advert? You just can’t. It is essentially leaving you powerless against tracking your return on investment. Not knowing where a lead comes from leaves you unable to do that. If you done it online, with a simple piece of code you will probably be able to insert yourself you can tell exactly where you are better off spending your budget.
