Chris Snyder a Reluctant Celebrity

I was browsing the web today, and I happened to see Yahoo’s list of “Top Searches” for the day. At number seven was a man named Chris Snyder. Who, you may ask, is Chris Snyder?

Chris Snyder is the catcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks, a member of Major League Baseball’s National League West Division. In 64 games this season, he is batting .246 with 7 home runs and a .779 OPS. He has just 47 hits in 64 games, which is certainly not a great ratio. He is by no means one of the more well known players in baseball. And his team is only 43-43, which is not a sparkling record by any means.

So why would an average catcher on an average baseball team be among the top searches on the internet? Well, it is certainly not for a reason that Snyder is proud of. And it is definitely not something that you will see in Arizona’s next brochure printing design. Chris Snyder is the unfortunate victim of what might be the most horrifying injury known to man.

If you are male, brace yourself. Chris Snyder’s injury: a testicular fracture. Yes, you read that correctly. Mr. Snyder has a broken testicle. This very scary injury occurred on Monday night (June 30), when a foul ball was redirected right into Snyder’s “sacred area”.

If that is not the scariest sounding injury in the history of medicine, I do not know what is. I am sure every catcher in baseball cringed when he heard about this. But it gets even worse. Until Thursday night, it was feared that Chris was going to require surgery to repair the damage done by the stray ball. The only thing worse than getting hit there is being told that someone is going to attack it with a sharp object.

Thankfully, Snyder escaped that ignominy. He will not require surgery, and he will probably only miss two weeks of action. Apparently, the injury is not quite as bad as it sounds. When I first saw the nature of his problem, I thought it might be career threatening.

Other Baseball News: Speaking of things that will not appear on a brochure printing design anytime soon, the San Diego Padres now have the worst record in the Major Leagues. They have fallen to 33-53, a full twenty games under .500. And this is a team that was expected to compete in the National League West. The strangest thing, however, is that despite their record they are just 10 games out of first place. That, of course, is due to the horrid play of every team in the division.

On the other side of the spectrum, the Tampa Bay Rays have the best record in the game. And that team was expected to finish in the cellar in the AL East, as they do almost every year. But they have turned a wealth of young talent into a tremendous record so far.
