Information
The Foundation of Web Hosting
This article will discuss the basic mechanics of web hosting and explain how all the separate components come together to give everyone the opportunity to publish information on the Internet.
Web hosting can be compared to a flea market or shopping mall. A large amount of space is purchased and then rented out to other individuals or companies. Once the space has been rented to these other individuals or companies then they will use that space to sell their products and services.
In the same way, when you buy a web hosting package you are buying space that can be used as you see fit. This space is on a hard drive of what is called a web server. A web server is nothing more than a high-end computer that has particular software which interprets requests from your browser.
Data cables are used to connect these web servers to the Internet. Trunk lines are the name given to the very large data cables that circle the world. Trunk lines are really many cables bound together which increases the speed data flows through them. The term trunk line comes from a tree that has a trunk and many branches extending from it. All the cables extending out from central points look like webs and is why it's called the World Wide Web.
A web hosting company will pay to have high-speed access to these trunk lines or backbone networks. Then they will offer this access to their own customers for a fee.
Many disparate technologies are stacked on top of each other. These technologies, both hardware and software, must work together seamlessly for web pages to be viewable on the Internet.
You have the two computers at either end. On the opposite end you have the web server that is housed at your web hosting company. It's common for web servers to have multiple high-end CPUs, more RAM and a much larger data capacity than a personal computer.
Then there is your personal computer with all of its hardware and software. This includes your Internet browser which parses and displays the data sent from the web server.
When you enter a domain name into your browser it transmits that request to the Domain Name Servers at your ISP, or Internet Service Provider. The DNS server attaches the correct IP address to the request and forwards it through the appropriate nodes so it can arrive at your hosting company. Once at your hosting company the request is then sent through a router with its firewall and ability to log all traffic.
The router then routes the request to the appropriate switch. Often times a high-end data center will have the switch mounted in the top of a rack of web servers. Less data cable is needed when the switch is located in the server cabinet. The cabinets are also air conditioned which cools the switch down.
The request is then forwarded by the switch to the right web server. The web server then finds the correct folder using the web server software. This software reads the data in that folder and sends it to your browser. Your web browser will then translate and present the information using a specific protocol.
Within a matter of seconds the whole process is complete and a world of information is at your fingertips.
