Like most phenomena associated with computing, internet access generally continues to increase year on year across the globe. PC ownership and modem ownership, in particular, have both continued to grow and penetration of the internet is now higher at home than at work in countries with the highest overall access.

There is no better time to get your business online, as e-commerce continues to grow in importance. Even as far back as 1999, findings by MORI in a survey conducted for Intentia, revealed that “e-business was set to double in importance over the next two years with the US only slightly ahead of Europe, demonstrating companies cannot afford to ignore e-business”. Even today, there has been a continuous increase in this growth, which has risen exponentially with the affordability of computers and the ease of connecting to the Internet.

The research revealed that across the manufacturing, retail and wholesale industry sectors 56% considered e-business would be essential or very important in 1 - 2 years' time for the sector in which they operated compared to 13% who considered it would be unimportant. Around two-thirds perceived it could give them a competitive advantage.

The Internet provides businesses with an opportunity for growth. This is especially important for small and medium sized organisations, which are now able to compete against the larger and more established companies. The main reason for this is down to cost. Now the ‘small players’ have the opportunity and ability to exploit new markets without the cost of having a traditional bricks and mortar business. This is coupled with the fact that a growing number of buyers are also now recognising the benefits of Internet trading, particularly in terms of reducing purchasing timescales and costs.

Whilst most businesses see that the Internet offers a unique opportunity to save both time and costs, gain and retain new customers, and offers an opportunity for increased efficiency and productivity, one key factor prevents businesses from going online. This is the lack of understanding of ‘how to’. This can be especially the case with the smaller players who do not or cannot afford to have a specialist team to work on the development and promotion of the business online.
