Congratulations to the Democratic Party for their election victories and for an excellent slate of candidates. For the first time in memory, a political party ran candidates with gravitas, and that is at the heart of their victory. I was inspired by the quiet dignity of Harold Ford, Jr. and his magnificent concession speech. I know we will hear from him again soon. America needs dignity back in Washington, D.C.

The Republican Party must now begin the process of collecting the ashes. Once again, the party of power and prestige must recover from their own hubris. It is time to return to the true values of the Republican Party, values of conservation and gradual, controlled change. The culture of corruption in Washington has fed the media a buffet of scandals. The war in Iraq will long be a black-eye to American interests on the world stage. And America’s families are once again familiarized with the horrors of war.

Now is a time for healing. America is still very divided. Now is the time to win over voters to the Democratic cause. Not by starting long, horrible battles that will further poison this republic but by focusing on the actual job of governing. America is crying out for leaders. This is the opportunity for the Democrats to once again become an enduring dynasty; but only if Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic members of Congress can show America that they are the party of hope, the party of a better tomorrow.

They are now confronted by a choice: make this a better country or drag everyone deeper into misery with prolonged hearings. Democrats need to re-earn the trust of the majority of America and they cannot do this by waving subpoenas. Democrats must focus on the politics of everyday life, on those issues which are most vital to us and our well being. Do not pander to the politics of hate, but strive resolutely in the politics of hope.

Work to bring peace to Iraq. Work so that Americans can afford health care. Work towards full employment. Secure our nation against attack. Turn back the assaults on American liberties and values. Restore America’s rightful place in the world. Stop the culture of corruption. Return our country to fiscal sanity and stop working only two days a week in Congress.

Remember that the daily issues of most Americans have nothing to do with political intrigue, but with the price of milk. With the mortgage payment that is due very soon. With a sick loved one. With the rearing and care of their children. With a loved one in Iraq. Remember who you serve! The American people have given you a great trust and they are watching. Succeed and you will be rewarded with another chance to make America better.

Do not take this as an opportunity for vengeance. Focus on tomorrow. Lead us out of the wilderness and into a better America. And while many will argue that good leadership requires destroying Bush and his party, it's really just revenge. Leave revenge to the voters.

These two campaign tactics, along with a third, newer strategy that just emerged in recent weeks, form the core of Howard Dean's plan for winning back the House and Senate after twelve years of Republican control. The first part of the campaign strategy centers on attacking the Republican candidate, Senator George Allen, by framing him as "guilty through association" for his support of the President and his policies.
