"BMX Bikes" - What a Ride
Remember not so long ago, when a bike was simply a frame and fork assembly with two wheels and a seat. Boy, have bikes come a long way since those days. One of the latest additions is the BMX bike.
These beauties evolved from the old stingray bikes of past. With a little smaller frame than other bikes, many additional features can be added for doing all kinds of different stunts. With the addition of foot pegs to the front and rear axles, one can actually stand on these and perform different maneuvers and tricks. Some of the stunts are relatively simple while others take a lot of time, practice and patience to perfect. Standing on the front pegs and spinning the rest of the bike frame around or going down a ramp and up another and then executing a summer sault in mid air when you shoot off the top of the ramp are just a few of the stunts that can be done.
As these bikes set out to be very popular over the past decade, many cities and towns have had special places both indoors and out pop up where riders can come and use the equipment to practice and perform their riding skills. There are ramps with different shapes and heights which provide the tools to perform many tricks that have already been done or the ability to create new ones of your own. With the outside facilities, many of the obstacles and ramps are made up from the dirt that's available right on the site. Besides the ramps and hills for stunt biking there are also courses set up which are used for races. Bike racing and bike riding in general have become very popular lately with a lot of it being attributed to the high cost of gasoline now a days.
There are also many competitions in the US and around the World that draw competitors from all over. One of the most popular is the famous X-Games. If you watch TV you have probably come across one of these competitions being broadcast on a sports channel and many are even broadcast on one of the major networks. If you have seen this type of competition, then you know that some of the stunts performed seem almost impossible for a person to do. It's mind boggling to imagine how much practice along with all the bumps, bruises and injuries that some of these competitors must go through to accomplish these feats. Everyone in a competition wears a lot of safety equipment to protect the elbows, knees and most importantly, the head with a helmet. If you have never seen one of these X-Games before, make sure you keep your eyes open and watch your TV guide so you can catch one of these wild competitions for yourself as you will be amazed.
Of course you don't have to compete to buy a BMX bike to enjoy. Just riding it on the streets of your neighborhood or in your own backyard is loads of fun. You can even do some of the easy stunts if you feel like challenging yourself. Just be very careful and don't attempt anything too hard or dangerous. Even at a non competitive level, always wear at least a helmet whenever riding a bike, no matter what kind of bike it is or where you ride it, period.
