The craps table is akin to a pool table, with a wood railing. The dice is cast against the railings. As the railings are lined with foam or sponge, the dice bounce back in random directions. The surface of the table is covered with a tightly woven felt, which outlines the various moves. The main areas for a beginner to concentrate on are the "Pass Line" area and the "Don't Pass" area.

Rules

The layout of the table is confusing for beginners. Just concentrate on the basic rules of the game. As stated, the basic bet is the "pass line" wager. The dynamics of the game are that on the first spin of the two dice, a roll of 7 or 11 (natural) implies a win for the pass line bettors, or "right" bettors score. If anyone else has a bet on the pass-line, he would win on this. 2, 3, or 12 rolling craps means a loss. Other numbers such as 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 are called points. To win, the pass-line bettor has to have a roll out of a point before getting a 7. If a 7 happens to roll out before the point, the shooter will surrender the right to shoot and a new chain begins starting with the player to the left of the first shooter.

A shooter can also place a do not pass wager. This is called "betting wrong”. This is contrary to the pass line wager and the don't-pass bettor loses when a natural is rolled out. The don't bettor wins when a craps is rolled out. The norm that most casinos follow is barring the 2 or 12 craps. This means that the house is not bound to pay the fixed craps roll. Be careful of those casinos that bar the 3 craps, as this doubles the house edge on the don't pass wager.

Four casino employees staff a craps table: a boxman who is charge of the chips and manages the dealers; two dealers who stand to collect and pay bets; and a stickman who stands opposite to the boxman. He usually announces the results. They also use their own terminology for specifying numbers.

A new player gives a pass line bet or a do not pass bet and then rolls the dice (called the "come out roll). A shooter has to place the minimum table bet and is given five dice out of which he picks two. On casting, if a die rolls off the table, the shooter can pick another one out of the remaining three, or if the boxman allows can reuse the fallen dice.

In case the first roll turns out a 7 or 11, it is specified as "making a pass”. This means that the "pass line" betters win and "don't pass" betters lose. In the eventuality of 2, 3 or 12 being rolled, it is a “craps" and the pass line betters lose, while do not pass line betters win. Sometimes, this also varies from state to state. Most of the casinos charge a commission of 1.4 percent on all line bets.

If any number, apart from 7, 11, 2, 3, or 12, is rolled out, it is called a "place" number, or a "point". This means that the pass line betters win and the do not pass bettors lose. In the case of a "sevening out", meaning that if a seven comes up the pass line bettors lose and do not pass bettors win. If there is a sevening, the player is out of the game and a new game commences.

If a place number comes out, a player can place different bets on consecutive rolls until a sevening out, at which point he is out of the game. This move is however beneficial to the house, with exclusion of two moves i.e. odds on a line bet, and "come" bets. It is preferable to focus on mainly these two as the others are tilted in favor of the house.
