Magnification

It is important to ensure binoculars have the correct magnification specification when you are buying them. For example the average magnification is something between 5 and 12. Under normally daytime conditions when using your binoculars while hunting, bird watching or at a sports event, the magnification number around 8 would be ideal. For night vision use for example looking out to sea at a sailing vessel the maximum magnification to obtain a clear image is usually 5. Remember, the higher magnification the reduced brightness of the image and decreased F.O.V (field of view).

Lens Diameter

“The lens diameter” is another important ‘must’ to consider. This is the second number for example “8 x 40”. The first number “8” is magnification and the second number “40” is the objective lens diameter. For poor light conditions if you are bird watching at dawn or in foggy conditions it would be best to have a large lens such as an “8 x 50” size binoculars. A fully multi-coated lens is normally superior and durable. So they are the ones to be on the look out for.

Lens Quality

Another key element is the lens quality on your binoculars. For precise clear images it is important to have a fully coated lens. To have a crisp, bright image not affected by any reflections is the ultimate and desirable outcome for any binocular user. Also if you use your binoculars while out fishing or a marine situation make sure they are waterproof preferably with anti-fogging lenses.

Summary

Remember there are specialized binoculars available especially designed for use during day and night vision hunting, bird watching, or during military or marine activities. It is important to decide on what you want because there are many options that might suit your personal requirements. For example are they too heavy? Are they sturdy enough for the job required? Do they suit your price range? Just because a binocular is expensive, does not mean it is the best.

It’s a good idea to read around and do some research on the internet before buying a pair of binoculars. If you make a good investment at the start then a good pair will last you a lifetime.
