The beginning stages of learning to play Capoeira are spent on basic fundamentals used to help the novice know how to move around safely. Being able to throw a properly executed kick and being able to escape in an appropriate manner in response to an opponent are very important elements. In an academic setting, repetition usually helps with perfecting ones form and skill level. But this is only a small part of learning Capoeira. The majority of learning for any capoeirista happens in the roda (pronounced hoda), where practiced moves, ideas, and reactions get applied. This is where two players have dialogue, reacting and executing moves in response to each other. A beginner learns how to move around, how to attack, and how to escape safely. An intermediate player learns to add more complicated moves, how to connect, and how to flow. The advanced learns patience and timing in order to use their perfected moves. And each player embodies the roles of both teacher and student. This means that a beginner should learn from an advanced student as well as the advanced should learn from the beginner.

An observer may see several types of games going on. Some are friendly while others may seem more aggressive. There are some where acrobatic moves are put to the test and some where the martial arts aspect of self defense are tested. It is important for the Capoeira player to distinguish one from the other. Having the mind set of playing nice and pretty will not help if facing an opponent who aggressively attacks. The game should change from an open one to a closed protective game, as not to let the opponent penetrate. The road understanding and mastering the game of Capoeira is a long path. Applying what is learned in class to playing in the roda many, many, many time will help to lead in the right direction.

Like religion and politics, martial arts are not for a lack of it's zealots. Decide right now, you can either A. Continue to "sip the kool-aide" or B. Look to improve and learn. One criticism about our training material is that it is simple and could only work against some one who is untrained. What the hell does this mean, exactly? Does trained mean a woman who takes muay thai or the serial rapist, sociopath who has successfully applied his trade a dozen times? Does it apply to the mixed martial artists or the bag-man on a pick up? Who do you want to fight for your life against, the martial artist or emotionally disturbed person (EPD) who gargles with pepper spray?
