The Changing Face of Cricket World
Cricket, which enjoys the kind of popularity that NFL or American football enjoys in the US or the kind of fan following football commands in the whole of Europe, has of late had incorporated many changes in its rules and has introduced a shorter and sleek version of cricket called the Twenty20 cricket.
And both these changes have succeeded in getting the desired results of making cricket less time consuming and attracting the youth to cricket. That’s what the successful completion of the first ICC Twenty20 World Cup had proved. Many for its long duration of play are often ridiculing cricket, which is called the gentlemen’s game. The great writer, George Bernard Shaw had quoted these immortal lines that sports fans that abhor cricket often say, “Cricket is a game played by 22 fools and followed by 22,000 fools.”
Thanks Christ! GB Shaw is not alive or else he would have stunned to see that cricket is followed like a religion in India that boasts of more than one billion population.
Cricket that originally started in England initially had only one version of the game called the “Test match” that lasts for five days. Slowly, the now popular one-day game made its debut in the year 1971 with the match between Australia cricket team and England cricket team. It was played in Melbourne and Australia had won the game with five wickets.
In the beginning, the ODIs were of 60 over, but slowly, the over were reduced to 50 over. Despite the pruning of 10 over, many fans still found the game too long to watch and that was affecting the growth of cricket. So, ICC constantly did changes in the rules of cricket to make it more interesting.
One such effort of the ICC was the induction of the Twenty20 cricket in its fold that instantly got the attention of sports fans. The ICC also altered the rules of cricket quite often. Some of the recent changes in the rules of cricket were in field restrictions, use of third umpire, use of numbered t-shirts, free hits, Duckworth Lewis method and then they introduced a new short and sleek format of cricket called Twenty20 cricket.
Luckily, the spectators whether it is Duckworth Lewis method or free hit method have appreciated all all these new rules of cricket. These days its better for cricket fans to be aware of all the latest cricket info so that they don’t find themselves dumbfounded the moment a free hit delivery is bowled or a winner has been declared by applying the Duckworth Lewis method, which is to ascertain the winner in rain disrupted matches.James is an associated author of http://www.sportsofworld.com/ James providing you good information on cricket info and all aspects related to cricket game like Duckworth Lewis method and cricket rules.
