A triathlon requires athletes to display their skills and endurance in three different sports namely, swimming, cycling and running.

A triathlon is much more demanding than other athletic events since it requires the competitors to excel in all the three sports. In order to do do well, place well and to increase the chances of winning, the athletes have to undergo professional triathlon training before the actual event.

Professional triathlon training can be broadly classified into three specific categories – training in swimming, cycling and running.

Swimming

Professional triathlon training requires the athletes to undergo specialized training in swimming that helps them to make the optimal use of their body movements in the water. This training for triathlon participants includes swimming long hours in the pool.

The training in swimming normally has three different stages.

In the first stage, the athlete concentrates on building endurance by swimming pools either via timed distances, for example 10 x 200's, one 200 every three minutes, or just one straight 2,000 yard swim.

In the second stage, the athlete tries different hand and leg movements to check which body movements work best for him.

In the final stage, the most appropriate body movement is selected and used for more endurance.

In this way, the athlete gets to learn the most appropriate form of swimming, based on specific physical features and endurance levels.

Cycling

Specialized training in cycling is another part of the overall professional triathlon training.

This training enables an athlete to develop the right cycling posture, learn the appropriate way to peddle and increase overall endurance levels.

Developing the right cycling posture is necessary for cycling not only in that the correct posture greatly increases your power output, but an athlete has to wind resistance to worry about and the correct posture certainly affects your comfort when you are spending hours on the bike.

This is extremely important in the competition, but also during your workouts. Learning the right way to peddle is also essential to conserve the precious energy required later.

Running

Training in running mainly focuses on building endurance and developing the muscle mass needed to successfully complete all the three legs of a triathlon.

The training varies from athlete to athlete, depending on their specific requirements.

It may involve weight training exercises to develop muscle mass or running long hours on a treadmill to build stamina and endurance.

Some athletes prefer to build endurance by running uphill or on a sandy beach, both of which help in developing leg muscles and increasing endurance levels.

*******

For swimming, cycling and running, it is a good idea to vary your workouts so as to avoid getting bored.

Although physical training is vital for success, athletes also need to be mentally strong to endure the hardships faced during a triathlon event.

Successful athletes swear by the power of the mind that propelled them across the 'finish' line, in spite of feeling completely drained and worn out.

The mental training is just as essential and empowers the physical abilities of the athletes, pushing them to achieve the ultimate test of endurance.
