A military academy is another name for a military school. They are mainly for teenagers but some academies take younger students. There are academies for boys and girls and some are single-sex institutions.

But military academies are not for every student. In fact, in some regards, they are restrictive. A potential pupil with a criminal record or serious health problems will most likely not be accepted. In fact any pupil who does not want to attend will be discouraged from applying. Parents who have a child with health or behavior problems can find an alternative and appropriate school for their teen.

Military academies take great pride in their reputation as providers of first class academic programs, outdoor education, the arts and personal growth. Academy students wear a uniform, have a pecking order within the student body, take drills and parades and must obey orders from staff. Discipline is hugely important in all academies.

In fact many parents send their son or daughter to a military academy because of the discipline policy. Students find they appreciate the rules, knowing what they can and can’t do and take pride when they achieve success. Failure to follow orders results in punishment and serious disobedience means the student is expelled.

Because class sizes are small and staff members are highly qualified and experienced and because additional study periods are mandatory and supervised, students at military academies tend to do very well with the academic studies. Excellent students excel and average students improve. There is a fine record of graduates obtaining a place at a highly regarded college or university.

But it is not just the academic side of a military academy which is highly regarded. Music and drama, sports and outdoor education are given priority too. With proper 24/7 supervision and a balanced and nutritious meal program, students are given every opportunity to be healthy and happy.

There is also regular and detailed communication between the academy and parents of the students. A constant monitoring of their progress is undertaken and parents kept informed of the progress of their child. Many parents believe the cost of sending their child to a military academy is worth every cent.

The aim too is to prepare young people for life after school. Some may wish to enter the military and attending a military academy is a perfect preparation for a military career.

Lifelong friendships are made between students who attend the same military academy. The school encourages friendships and friendly rivalry in sporting and other school pursuits.

One major benefit is the development of leadership skills within the student body. Students are challenged and given opportunities to grow as individuals and become independent. These are life skills of inestimable value. Self-confidence and a high sense of self-esteem are developed within each student. They graduate with a strong academic record and a purpose in life.

Many parents worry about the dangers on offer to teens today but take a great sense of pride in the achievements of their son or daughter who excels in a military academy.
