Just as the role of women in the military has changed over recent years, so too has the number of girls studying in a military school. There are many women in the military and far more girls as students in both single-sex and co-educational military schools.
And there are clear reasons why this is so. First the issues facing young girls today have never been so dangerous and prevalent. Take one issue alone – drugs. Parents want to protect their daughter and the security of a military school provides wonderful protection. These schools have built an enviable reputation of being a safe and secure place in which a young woman can study and grow.
But it is far from being the only reason why girls are enrolling in military schools in far greater numbers today. There is the excellent academic record established by these schools. The girls are in small classes, have supervised and compulsory study sessions after class hours and are prepared for quality colleges and universities. Girls who have an eye on a career in the military are in an excellent position having attended a military school.
But parents want more than just a safe environment and a first class academic program. And military schools provide much more. They offer outdoor education and sporting facilities of the highest standards. In mixed schools, the girls are expected to match the boys in fitness levels although goals in certain physical activities are less severe on young growing females.
Then there is the artistic side of life with many military schools offering special studies in music, dance and drama.
And of course there are the discipline and personal development aspects as well. Girls wear the same uniform, are given a rank within the student body and must attend to their personal space at all times. The rules are strict but fair and all orders must be obeyed.
Discipline is strict. Disobey the rules and suffer the consequences. Military schools have a reputation for the highest standards. Girls who misbehave or are a trouble are punished and, if necessary, shown the door. There are parades and drills and many aspects of life in the military are replicated in the school.
But this attitude is what so many girls and their parents actually want. They want the military school to push them, to challenge and encourage them. Girls are given the chance to take on leadership roles. Personal growth is a vital part of life for every student. Parents are kept abreast of the progress of their daughter and encouraged to communicate with her.
But a military school environment is both a testing and a resting place. Each girl can find self-confidence and build her self-esteem through the challenges at her school. She can leave not just with an excellent academic record but also having formed life-long friendships and a self-belief which will stand her in good stead for her working career and whatever else life puts her way. It is easy to see why so many girls are now attending a military school.
