Troubled Teens and Military Schools

Many parents who have a teenager in trouble think that a stay in a military school will be the ideal solution for their child. They will not have to deal with a troubled teen and their child will get the treatment they need to get them back on the straight and narrow. Unfortunately that is not the way the world works today. Military schools are not dumping grounds or instant cure-alls for troubled teens.

That’s not say a military school isn’t a brilliant choice for your child but it must be the right fit. Find out what is troubling your teen and then find the ideal facility to help them.

Let’s first consider the child. If they have a serious problem with drugs, alcohol or criminal activity, then they obviously need help. There are residential programs which deal specifically with these areas and there are outpatient facilities at some local clinics and community centers. In any local treatment center, your child remains living at home. You can be actively involved in the treatment of your child and the costs of their treatment will be considerably less.

Let’s now consider the military school option. In fact it isn’t an option for certain would-be students. Military schools will not accept a student who has a serious problem with behavior. They are there to help students who are fit and healthy and who will accept the rules of the school. A student with say a drug problem will not help the other students who wish to study hard. So a parent thinking of sending their son or daughter to a military school should be aware of the health of their child and then understand that the military school option may not be an option.

But for the right type of student, a military school is a wonderful option. So who is the right type of student? Well it’s someone who is bright and wants to work hard, someone who needs to be pushed to excel at their studies, someone who has leadership potential and/or someone who thrives on sporting activities, outdoor education and/or the performing arts. These students will benefit greatly should they enroll in a military school.

Getting back to those parents who are distressed because of their teen’s bad behavior, please consider the wide range of resources which exist to help someone like your child. There are residential camps, private therapy sessions and even some public high schools which offer therapy or some form of treatment program. It’s just a matter of finding the right program. This is the key. Each troubled teen is unique and each needs therapy which directly deals with their problem.

But those teens who enroll in a military school will receive an education which will bring out the best in those students. High academic standards are the basic requirements the school sets and excellent opportunities for college and university success are guaranteed. Any young man or woman seeking a career in the military will be looked upon favorably as a graduate of a military school.
