All over the world there are different types of readers. Identifying where you belong in this area will help you to make the necessary changes to help you with your speed reading ambition. I know of three types of readers namely auditory, motor, and sight reader. Which category do you belong? A careful analysis of each of them will help you to appreciate what must be done to achieve an amazing rate of reading irrespective of whatever category of reader you belong to.

Categories of Readers:

1. Auditory reader. Auditory means the use of the sense of hearing to perceive sounds of information around and within us. An Auditory reader hears the words he reads. In other words, he unconsciously listens to every word he reads. He hears these words because he tries to read it out without meaning to, thus while reading, an auditory reader mumbles or whispers. For some there is the vibration of the adams apple while they are reading. The truth is because attention is paid on the reading and listening of each word, the speed of reading is slowed down and again the comprehension level of an auditory reader is limited. Therefore, to fully comprehend any material, the auditory reader must spend more time on that particular article which ultimately defeats speed reading principles.

2. Motor reader. It is called the motor reader because of the movement involved. A motor reader moves some parts of his body while attempting to read. Some motor readers taps their legs on the floor continuously while reading without consciously knowing they are doing so. Others move other parts of the body while reading. On closer inspection, it is noticed that the motor reader is a faster reader than the auditory reader. Nevertheless, the movements of the parts of the body causes a hitch in the fastness of reading.

3. Sight Reader. The fastest reader type is the sight reader. This is because this type of reader focuses on visual aids and images to read. A visual reader has a quicker understanding of material because his reader type allows him to visualise the information and thus have a greater understanding of the material under consideration. Unlike other reader types that have distractions in the form of body movements and listening to words.

How does the above reader type affect you as a prospective speed reader? Identifying where you belong here will help you to make the necessary changes. Thus if you want to be a speed reader, you will need to be a sight reader. As a sight reader, it will be easier for you to plan and implement those speed reading techniques needed to achieve a good rate of reading.

So what do you do at this juncture? Try reading this very material again. Try reading normally but this time pay attention to yourself and see whether you are moving any part of your body or listening to words mentally. Are you mumbling while reading? It is important that you spot all these speed reading deficiencies. Once you are able to identify where you belong, it will be easy for you to make a shift from where you are right now to where you want to be. Being a sight reader is not going to be easy, you will need to practice reading without those unnecessary distractions that characterises other reader types.

To see how well you are doing, once you have discovered you can sight read, try re-reading this article again. This time try reading as fast as you can with stop watch on your hand to time you. Check your comprehension level. Continuous practice will help you to successfully convert to a sight reader, then your goal of becoming a speed reader is gradually coming to its fulfilment.
