For someone who is studying Spanish, learning to speak Spanish like a native is an important part of learning the language.
The problem with learning a language in a classroom setting, however, is that there is little opportunity to actually practice speaking. Most of the time is spent on writing or reading. However, because there can be upwards of 30 or 40 students in a college Spanish class, there isn't much interaction with the teacher or other students to help you learn to speak Spanish like a native.
While this can be frustrating and disheartening, there are some steps you can take to overcome this classroom deficiency. These seven steps do require you to take charge of your learning and be proactive, but if you implement them, you will be that much closer to reaching your goal of speaking Spanish like a native.
1) Do a study abroad: This are great because they put you in a full-time Spanish-speaking environment in a Spanish-speaking country. If you decide to do one, however, don't spend all your time speaking English to your friends. It will be tempting to do, but your Spanish language will not progress to the level you want.
2) Watch TV in Spanish: Do you ever feel that you're not getting enough street Spanish in class? Well, listening to TV programs in Spanish will not only help your listening skills, but that will also improve your speaking in those areas.
3) Make friends with someone from a Spanish-speaking country: This is a great way to improve your language skills. Be sure to not spend all the time speaking English to each other, though.
4) Hire a language tutor: There are many people who work as one-on-one language tutors. If you don't have that much extra money, hire one for an hour a week and your language will improve.
5) Find someone online: With Internet technology as advanced as it is today, you could find someone in a Spanish-speaking country and speak to them over them Internet using a free service like Skype. You could trade off with them speaking in English and in Spanish so you both could learn.
6) Read Spanish out loud: I think one of the easiest ways to learn to speak Spanish like a native is to read a Spanish novel out loud. Reading out loud will improve your fluency and comprehension.
7) Find a job that requires you to speak Spanish: Finding a job where you have to interact with Spanish-speakers is another great way to improve your Spanish-speaking skills, as well as earn some extra money.
These suggestions are just a few of the ways that you can learn to speak Spanish like a native. Even implementing one or two of these steps will dramatically improve your speaking ability if you are diligent in implementing them.
