Ultrasound Schools offer a variety of programs of study for certification, as well as degrees such as associate, bachelor, and master. Medical ultrasonography machines take expert skill to properly operate, requiring proper education and specialized certification.

Ultrasound bounces sound waves that generate visual images used for evaluating health. Ultrasound technology (also known as sonography) allows for viewing moving muscles, veins and other soft tissues, making it superior to x-ray. Perhaps the most familiar use for ultrasound is to assess the health of unborn fetuses in the womb, but there are many other medical applications for ultrasound.

Students learn the proper imaging techniques used in many various procedures to aid in diagnosing conditions and ailments. Future sonographers will also learn the proper methods for keeping patient records, and adjusting and maintaining ultrasound equipment. Once employed, the ultrasound technician's duties may include equipment purchases, scheduling procedures, and the administration of an Ultrasound or diagnostic imaging department.

A Bachelor Degree in Radiologic Sciences includes hands-on laboratory requirements, and helps to enhance career opportunities. To apply for a bachelor degree program, the applicant must hold a certificate or an associate degree in Radiologic Technology. Additional studies required for baccalaureate degrees include technical writing, and humanities, sciences, and communication skills.

Qualified technicians are in demand in all fields of ultrasound. Most ultrasound and sonography technicians work in hospitals, while others find work in physician's offices and in medical and diagnostic laboratories.
