Bat Mitzvah: A Jewish Female's Celebration of Coming of Age

The female equivalent of Bar Mitzvah, Bat Mitzvah, is the rite of passage between childhood and becoming an adult female, in the Jewish faith. At approximately the age of twelve, Jewish females become Bat Mitzvah. At this time, she becomes responsible for herself and her life decisions, both inside and outside the church. At this time, the parents are no longer responsible for their daughter’s actions.

Originally, a simple ceremony was held in a synagogue, honoring the newly attained adult status, and the friends and family had a celebratory feast in honor of the attainment of Bat Mitzvah. In modern times, this normally still occurs, but is often followed by a party. Some families celebrate by traveling to the Holy Land. Others have parties of various types and extravagance.

Invitations are sent out early, gifts usually cost anywhere from $18 to $36 and up, but in multiples of 18. This is often a party in which all ages are present, but occasionally, the earlier celebration dinner signifies the end of the party for adults, besides the chaperones. Often the party is held outdoors, if weather permits, and the parents rent tents and chairs, and traditional kosher foods and drinks are available. When weather does not permit, the parties can be held in rented great halls, or even be held as gender specific slumber parties.

One unique idea is to give each guest their own Polaroid camera (or there are photographers who will come to your party, take photographs, and even frame them on the spot, so the merry makers can take home their own photo as a party favor) with film, and small photo albums, so they can add to a larger scrap book for the girl who has attained Bat Mitzvah, and create their own, keeping the camera and small photo book for themselves.

Bat Mitzvah is one of the biggest rites of passage in the Jewish faith. Whether the celebration is quiet, elaborate, or signifies travel to the Holy Land, Bat Mitzvah is always a very significant time for a young Jewish woman.
