You Can't Have It All Now - You Must Earn It

As you seek your ultimate success, do you take the time to ask yourself "Is my goal and the timeframe for the achievement of it realistic?" Recently, to celebrate our anniversary, my wife and I went to one of our favorite restaurants, Rosalie's Cucina, in Skaneateles, NY. It's as genuinely Italian as I've seen in the States. To study this place would give you a business education beyond what many universities give.
The walk from the parking lot takes you through the giant herb garden that they pick from daily for the night's dinners. When we walked in we were greeted by the host who called me by first name for the rest of our stay. Since they don't take reservations for small parties, we talked and sipped wine at the bar for an hour, where I experienced the best Chardonnay of my life. As we were being seated, the host excitedly sold us on how wonderful our servers were, telling us that they really enjoyed themselves and that we would love them. He was right. They were great, and the food... as always, magnificent!
Learning that it was our anniversary, we were serenaded by Rafael, one of the two singing hosts. Every night they go all around the restaurant and sing whatever Italian melodies you want. It's incredible. This guy with a voice that could blow the roof off came right to our table and sang a beautiful Italian love song just for us and didn't hold anything back. This extraordinary singer is 75 years old - married for 50 years. He doesn't look a day past 62. And I know. I used to work with 90% senior citizens. He still works 6 days a week. But for him it's not work. It's his joy.
Can you imagine having a job where you get to do what you're great at, do what you love, where you bring smiles and tears of joy to everyone you meet and get applauded...constantly, six days a week? Wouldn't that be something? It wasn't always that way for Rafael, but with hard work and a bit of good fortune, at a pretty advanced age he gets to do what makes him happy.
I wish everyone that kind of happiness. I want that when I'm 75. I get emails every week from people who want to own restaurants like Rosalie's. They want to sing to audiences, cook gourmet dishes, write books about success, help lots of people, live in an expensive home and drive fancy cars... But they want it immediately. And they can't let go of their current habits and routines.
If you get frustrated because your dreams aren't happening fast enough, I understand. I used to feel that way, too. But I've been working my butt off for 19 years, and just now everything is coming together. And I was considered the best in the world at my job. And still it was a like a twisting, looping roller coaster ride of a life. Lots of dizziness and feeling sick!
But listen now closely. Because this is a principle of life... You can't have it all now. You only get big rewards when you earn them... when you know how to keep them. Because if you taste a little success and lose it, it was just a taste. A tease. And you have to know the difference. When you get your tastes, if the little successes don't materialize into the giant successes that you desire right away, know that it's there for you, but you just must not be ready yet to handle it. And that's O.K.
Because if you accept and embrace this truth, you won't get depressed. You won't be upset. You'll be excited to know what is in store for you in your future... if you trust in yourself and persist until you succeed. But if you don't believe me - if you don't accept and embrace this truth, then you've got a lot of pain to suffer yet. And the success you crave will elude you for years...maybe forever.
Before you can gain the great skills and garner the rewards and awards, you've got to gain small skills, and suffer no appreciation at all for your efforts. I know, it hurts. But if you will only believe this, then it will hurt less. Then not at all.
You know the greatest baseball players who ever lived only succeed about 30% of the time. But 30% earns them millions of dollars, adoring fans and could get them into the Hall of Fame. So why are you so scared to fail? Risk something. You won't look that dumb.
The people that may laugh are too scared to risk anything themselves. The greatest of us will see themselves in you as you pick yourself up from your latest learning experience. They won't laugh. They'll be crying joyfully, inspired by your guts, your persistence and your belief in yourself. I know I will. 'Cause I just picked MYself up, dusted myself off and kept going. C'mon. Let's go. We've got places to go, you and me.
WINNING BELIEFS:
-- I'm getting everything I want when I'm ready to get it
-- I'm giving all of myself in preparation for my success
-- I enjoy everything I do in my goal achievement efforts
-- I'm reaching my potential through my daily habits
-- Life is really fun now
-- I bring happiness and joy with me wherever I go
