We have at the present time an incredible challenge facing us. There is a critical shortage of laughter. It is not at all clear when it began, but it is clear that it exists. You need only look around to observe the diminishing supply of laughter. Do you hear any laughter right now? See what I mean? Where once there was laughter in abundance, there are now only slight giggles, weak smiles, and the occasional chuckle. We are fortunate that unlike other natural resources, laughter can and will replenish itself. It is contagious and will spread quickly with proper cultivation. Consequently, it is imperative that each of us accept personal responsibility and do our part to increase the supply. After all, we don’t want to become totally dependent on foreign laughter. Here are four steps you can take to be sure that the generations to follow will not be without laughter and social security.
1 - Fake it till you make it: Fake laughter is better than no laughter at all. Since laughter is contagious, you can fake a hysterical laugh and watch those around you look at you like your crazy. When they do, that will make you really laugh. They will join you. Go ahead, try it.
2 - Learn to laugh at yourself: The next time you do something stupid like spill a glass, stub your toe, or make the wrong turn, instead of getting mad and swearing, force yourself to laugh. Again, even a fake laugh is better than no laugh at all. It will make you feel much better and it will add to the supply.
3 - Ask people to make you laugh: Go up to someone with a big smile on your face and say, “Please, make me laugh.” They will think you are kidding, but the big smile on your face will jump start your laughter. Chances are the person you asked will not have done a thing, but they will be happy that they fulfilled your request. They will also start laughing. This is an amazing thing. Go ahead try it.
4 - Get some props: Visit your local party store. Get some Groucho Glasses, a rubber chicken, whoopee cushion, some disappearing ink, a wig, and whatever you can find. Bring your prop out when someone is least expecting it. They will laugh and you will laugh. If they don’t laugh, ask them why they insist on contributing to the laughter shortage. If they don’t get it, give them the morning memo. If they still don’t get it, slip them the whoopee cushion when they aren’t looking.
The more difficult you find these steps the more important they are to you. The more uncomfortable the thought of doing anyone of these four is the greater your contribution can be in overcoming the shortage. This situation needs to be met head-on. Nobody can fill your assigned laughter quota but you…nobody! It is time to Take Fun Seriously.
Start now….fake a laugh….ha, ha ha, ha ha ha, ha ha ha ha……
