How to Make Friends
In today's society, popularity is everything. Even celebrities compete amongst themselves to decide who is the most popular, vying to get the most air-time and the most reaction from fans. Everyone wants to enjoy the status that comes with popularity, and the experience of having a lot of friends. The trouble is, many do not know how to make friends to attain that status of popularity. When you need to know how to make friends, learn first how to talk to people.
Making friends is all about having a certain amount of social finesse. People like people who are easy to talk to and fun to be around. Hone your social skills by chatting with the people that you see on an every day basis. The clerk at the gas station, the checker at the supermarket, the teenager at the video rental store - talk to them. Give them a friendly smile and ask them how they're doing. Learn how to make small talk by making small talk.
When you need to know how to make friends, you need to know how to be friendly. A cheerful smile often makes people feel at ease, and lets them know that you're in a mood to be friendly. Politely ask people how they're doing, as this often leads to more information and more chatter. Ask people questions about themselves (nothing too invasive) to show your interest. Look people in the eye when you speak to them and address them clearly. Showing the person that you're talking to that you're interested in them is very friendly, and will help them to open up and talk to you. All friendships are formed verbally - so know how to talk to people to know how to make friends.
Friends are also formed by phone calls and planned outings together. After you've spent some time socializing and talking with a person and you feel there is a true potential for friendship, it's not uncommon to exchange phone numbers and plan a future meeting or outing together. You might invite a new acquaintance out shopping, to lunch, to a movie - all of these things are appropriate. Confirm the date with a friendly phone call a day or two before the planned event, and finalize plans. The friendship should begin to progress naturally. When you know how to make friends, you'll find that meeting people is much easier.
Knowing how to make friends is no big mystery. It all starts with a friendly chat.
