Can you believe it, October is here! Autumn has taken a firm grip in the Northern Hemisphere and we can see and feel the approach of Winter. That back to school, fresh beginning feeling of September has come and gone already. If you’re not studying full time or doing an evening class, you may have missed out on the reinvigorating sense of starting something new or having a fresh start at something not so new. Are you just snuggling down for a winter of hibernation, waiting for the new year to make a new start?
I regularly come across people who at this time of year give up on goal-setting, or life-changing. It’s amazing how the time of year (and most especially the weather) can influence our outlook and approach to life. September is a time of fresh beginnings – very much like January. (I think because throughout our formative years September is the beginning of the year for us, we never lose that fresh start feeling when we see the kids return to school)
But if we don’t harness that feeling at the time, it quickly slips away as the evenings become darker, earlier. The lack of exposure to daylight does sap energy and the evenings are only going to get longer over the next few months. So the sooner you get started and build momentum, the better! We’re only starting the last quarter of the calendar year, and that gives us a full three months to restart as we mean to go on! Instead of settling down to watch back to back TV shows during the cold wintry evenings, you could take some time to look review your start of year goals and intentions.
How far along are you? What did you not succeed in doing? Why not, what obstacles got in the way? What supports can you put in place to overcome them now? Are your goals still even relevant to you? If not, what would you rather have achieved by the end of this year?
If you’re mulling over a big hairy audacious goal for next year, what can you do now to prepare the way, so that when January comes you can hit the ground running. Gathering momentum through baby steps makes the achievement of goals easier and more likely to manifest. The secret to living the life of your dreams is to start doing so now, in whatever small way you can manage.
In order to get started, promise yourself rewards for each step you take. It doesn’t have to be an expensive reward, but do make it something that will motivate you to get going.
So if you know you want to make significant changes in your life, don’t put it off till January, or till you get your raise, or till circumstances change for the better. Start now in some small way, and keep on going, no matter what the weather!
