Do you cry out "Avalanche!" when you open your closet doors? If so, it may be time to consider tacking those closets and getting organized once and for all. It can be very overwhelming to undertake such a huge project, but when you break it down into 5 simple steps it becomes much easier to handle and manage.

There are many benefits of being organized, though it can be difficult to do at first. Having your space well definied and used to its fullest capacity not only can help reduce stress, but it can save you time and money as well, since you won't be spending as much time looking for or replacing lost or misplaced items.

Here are 5 Simple Steps to Organizing Your Closet:

1. Empty it All Out: The first thing to do is to take every single thing that is in there out of the space. Yes, this will create quite the mess, but it is a necessary step in order to see what items you have stuffed in there as well as to visualize a plan for organizing your materials more efficiently. When you are emptying it out, you may want to place items in groups, such as clothes in one pile, shoes in another, etc. Be sure you also make piles for things you don't really use or need as well as items that belong somewhere else.

2. Create a Plan: Once the space is emptied out, you are ready to make a plan and you will have an accurate assessment of everything you need to fit into your closet. Decide which items will need to be placed on hangers and if any additional items will be necessary for storing your belongings. Using a pen and paper to draw out sample layouts can help you visualize and plan a design that will work for your needs.

3. Gather Materials You Need: If you will be using crates or hangers, you will want to make sure that you have all of these items easily accessible before you start placing things back into the closet. Be sure you have enough of these items. If you need additional space, consider using collapsing bars or installing wall hooks.

4. Put Items Back: Now that you have a plan and the items that you need, you can start putting things back into your space. If possible, you may want to consider organizing things a further step by color coordinating them or keep like items together, such as putting all of the winter clothes on one side of the hanging rack and summer clothes on the other side.

5. Label It: Putting labels on shelves and containers will help you remember what belongs there without having to open it up or empty it all out. It will also help in subconciously reminding you to help stay organized and put things where they belong after you use them.

It may not be the most fun thing to do to get organized, but when you are all done and see how much simpler your life has become, you'll be glad that you did!
