I once heard a quote by a very famous person who was talking about divorce. I don't follow the celebrity circuit but this particular quote was very good. Bruce Willis answered the question about his impending divorce like this, "Marriage is a garden and to ensure that you have a good marriage every day you must tend to the weeds." Because I'm a wanna-be and a sometimes gardener, I related to that statement on a more global scale, life.

Today I was speaking with a friend about some hard lessons that we had both been encountering and he said he was taking a day last week to reflect. He said that he was sitting in the backyard and found that a wonderful metaphor for looking inside his life's backyard and working on the issues surrounding him. I told him about the gardening metaphor and he agreed that that was exactly what he was doing.

Every day we have an opportunity to interact with people. We can choose to be kind and generous or we can choose to be short and curt. If we can essentially look within ourselves first before we react and respond to another in any other way than with a smile and kindness we are treating ourselves well. By gardening the weeds from our lives we have more freedom from negative thoughts and negative influences and allowing the landscape to flourish with abundance of beauty. Weeds could be those nuisance attitudes, negative thoughts, impatience, frustration, and hurt. Just like weeds, if enough of them are left in place they then grow too big and need to be excavated.

You've heard the saying "We reap what we sow". This is true in every aspect. If you speak negatively about others, other's will speak negatively about you. By gossiping about others' you invite other's to gossip about you (as a client of mine will attest to). If you are kind, even in your most difficult times, you find that life treats you well and people appear from nowhere to help you. If you volunteer or help others then you will be helped. Just because you don't see the help in the way you expect remind yourself that it could be in a way that is much more appropriate than you expected.

If you've ever cut someone with words and admonished yourself afterward, think about how amazing it would be if you turned the tables. Instead of cutting someone down with the power of words be overly kind and see what results you get. The energy behind our words is truly magic and can make life easier or much more difficult. Speaking kind words about others' is like having a storehouse of seeds for the future. It's always better to have a large supply of seeds available for withdrawal so in difficult times life won't be so bumpy.

Planting the seeds of kindness, love, friendship, respect, tolerance will get you more than you expect. Eliminating expectations about what you receive often allows for a larger return on the seeds you planted. Now that spring is here begin looking within to see what weeds need to be excavated and begin planting beautiful flowers.
