The Girl with a Pearl Earring is one of Johannes Vermeer’s most famous paintings. Vermeer, a Dutch painter, used a tiny detail, such as the pearl, to make a beautiful, grand statement. Girl with a Pearl Earring is sometimes called the “Dutch Mona Lisa” or the “Mona Lisa of the North.” A movie of the same title was also made, starring American actress Scarlett Johansson and British actor Colin Firth and based on the popular novel by Tracy Chevalier.

There is actually very little known about the Dutch artist and his works. This particular painting s not dated, it is only signed “IVMeer,” which signifies that the painting is indeed an original Vermeer painting. Most of Vermeer’s paintings were commissioned, so it is highly likely that this one was commissioned as well. If nothing else, most art historians agree that this painting was not meant to be the usual, traditional portrait.

Art critics agree that the image in the painting is a prime example of a “tronie” which was how a “head” that was not quite meant to be a portrait was referred to back in 17th century Dutch. A restoration of the painting was undertaken back in 1994, which indeed enhanced the vivid colors and the striking beauty of the girl’s gaze. Still, after much restoration and much study, questions about the beautiful painting still remain. For example, who was the model in the portrait? Was it truly intended as portrait? Why did the painting remain obscure until it was rediscovered in 1882? Did the artist actually sell the painting? Was the pearl a real pearl? Why was the girl wearing a turban, when it wasn’t in fashion back then? What significance did it have, if any? What procedures in painting did the artist use? What pigments did he incorporate?

Still, even though there are still mysteries surrounding the painting, Girl with a Pearl Earring still remains one of the art world’s favorite masterpieces. It’s often been produced and reproduced in various forms such as tapestries, wall hangings and wall prints. These make for beautiful accents for your home and office.
