Over 1,225,000 people tour 230.388 hectare park each year, that’s the attractiveness of Toronto Islands. Beautiful landscape, extraordinary hospitality, amazing wildlife & even more are the attractions which drag tourists to his amazing island. Let’s discuss about the birth & growth of this islands.

The Toronto Island were not always islands but in fact a series of constantly moving sand bars, or littoral float deposits, beginning from the Scarborough Bluffs & carried in the west direction by Lake Ontario currents. By the early 19th century, the longest of these bars stretched nearly 10 kilometers north-west from Woodbine Avenue, throughout Ashbridge’s Bay & the marshes of the minor Don River, forming an innate harbor between the lake & the mainland.

Visitors who have been to Toronto Island tours have admired their lakeside charm for last few decades. Although the peninsula & surrounding sand-bars were initially surveyed in 1792 by Lieutnant Bouchtte Member of British Navy Squad, they were well-known by local people, who measured them a place of freedom & relaxation. The chief peninsula was recognized to European settlers as the "Islands of Hiawatha". D Smith's Gazetteer recorded in 1812 that "the long seashore or peninsula, which affords a most pleasant ride, is considered so hale and hearty by the Indians that they resort to it every time they were unwell". A lot of Indian camps were located between the peninsular base & the River Don. The sand bars are also significant to birds & other wildlife.

A cart path leading to Gibraltar Point from York at the western tilt of the peninsula, & also followed the beach east to Scarborough Bluffs, was extremely popular during the early 19th century. It later started recognizing as Lake Shore Boulevard. Part of the walkway on Centre Islands traces this similar route. A link across the Don River that was build to enable people from the capital to reach Lake Shore Boulevard also aided settlement west of the river. In 1860, the young engineer San Fleming studied the sand-bars movement & calculated that 12 hectares had been added to the eastern section of the sand-bar over the previous forty years. During that decade, a number of brutal storms & their sturdy wave action worked to grind down the peninsula, requiring regular repair to small gaps until lastly, in 1858, an island was created when a storm entirely separated the peninsula from the main land & the gap was not fixed. The Western Gap has since turn out to be an important shipping path into the Toronto Harbor.

Searching projects have been assumed to steady shorelines, reduce sandbars movement, raise land levels usually or craft deeper boating canal. During 1903-6, a canal was cut south of the Island Filtration lodge, alongside Hiawatha Boulevard. In 1910, Long Pond was searching to replace the regatta path previously located at Harlan’s Point. The resulting material was used to increase Mug’s Island. In 1999, Metro & six municipalities were merged to become the innovative City of Toronto.
