Antarctica has one of the harshest weather conditions on the planet. This is because very low temperatures characterize the weather in Antarctica, which varies in the different locations. In addition to this, temperatures that are considered "warm" in Antarctica are the temperatures that hover slightly below freezing. Apart from the very cold weather, people who live in Antarctica are also vulnerable to various natural hazards that include blizzards and cyclic storms. Moreover, the terrain in Antarctica is mainly made up of ice sheets that cover 98% of the whole land area. The other 2% is rock. This means that there is literally no arable land in Antarctica.

As a result of these conditions, most people think that there is not a real estate market on the continent. However, this perception is wrong because there is indeed a real estate market in Antarctica mainly due to the fact that there are people who go to Antarctica for research, and where there are people, there would be a need for accommodations.

Where to Find Antarctica Real Estate

As with anything these days, the best place to start a search for Antarctica real estate is the Internet. This is because, given the fact that there is a demand for accommodations in Antarctica, you can count on the fact that there would be some very enterprising real estate agents who wish to capitalize on this demand, even if it is very small. Given this, a simple search in a search engine of the words "Antarctica Real Estate" would actually yield a number of leads that would show real estate listings in Antarctica.

Among the different properties that are listed, the most common are hotels that have been built to provide accommodations to the researchers and to their support teams. However, unlike the usual hotels, these hotels can only be used for five months a year, given the harsh weather conditions during the rest of the year. Surprisingly, these hotels also provide some of the amenities that we find in other hotels, which include complete furnishings, cable TV, gyms, spas, and most rooms with views of the mountains. One example of such a hotel is the Apart Hotel, which has fifty rooms.

Given the harsh conditions in Antarctica, people would expect that there would be no real estate market in the region. However, given that there is a large number of researchers who regularly go to Antarctica, a real estate market does exist in Antarctica. The good news is that the real estate market offers very similar accommodations to what we see in other areas, especially with regard to the hotels in the area.
