Architecture in Helsinki

Although it is also the name of a famous Australian pop group, architecture in Finland's capital expands beyond the four walls of Helsinki hostels.

The city itself is the vibrant social hub of the country, which manages to maintain an odd balance of international city and local town feel.

Suomenlinna

An incredible sea fortress on the Baltic Sea, this is piece of architecture was an integral part of Finland winning its autonomy from the Russian Tsar. The fortress itself seems stuck in a time warp, with ancient buildings and cannons providing a glimpse into the past.

It is also one of the largest maritime fortresses in the world, as well as one of the largest dry docks. In a testament to its architectural quality and significance, it was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Today, this is a popular tourist attraction, and, as any Helsinki Hostels guide will tell you, is home to excellent restaurants and theatres. In addition, tours of the famous towers and catacombs are not be missed.

Seurasaari

Located on a beautiful green island a short distance from the capital's center, and hence from Helsinki hostels, this open air museum allows tourists to experience the best of the country's well-preserved historical buildings.

The island is full of small walks and trails, each its own voyage of discovery. However, the main focus is without a doubt the huge collection of architecture.

Spanning a huge selection of architecture from the 18th to 20th centuries, from small Finnish houses to large old windmills, there is plenty to see.

Senate Square

Some of the city's most impressive architectural examples are found here, spanning religious to political buildings.

Notable landmarks include the Lutheran Cathedral with its unmistakable white wash walls and columns and blue rooftops. There is also the central statue of Alexander II and the Prime Minister's Palace and cabinet building.

Church of the Rock

Unlike many of its classical architectural counterparts, including Helsinki hostels, the church of the rock is a refreshingly modern building. Carved entirely into a large piece of rock, its intricate copper-stripped roof is also a highlight.

Before working as a copywriter for HostelBookers, Paul Scottyn did a number of Backpacking tours in Finland, where he visited a some of Helsinki hostels.
