Driving to Canada is a great way to experience the scenic sights and nature up North. Many Americans make the journey to Canada every year. It’s really not all that far and the drive can be beautiful. However, taking your car across the border is not as easy as it used to be. It’s important to be aware of all of the requirements for driving across the border before you set out on your trip. Getting all that way just to find that you are not properly equipped will be frustrating and a huge waste of time and money.

You must bring picture identification that clearly states you are legally allowed to drive in your state. Border crossings are very strict with things like this and will most likely want I.D. from everyone within your car. All adults should have I.D. and kids should have passports and birth certificates. New laws are being incorporated so that all vehicles crossing the border between the U.S. and Canada will be asked to show passports as well as I.D.

It is a good idea to look up all of the border rules before you attempt to pack your bags and jump in the car. It’s incredibly common for people to make mistakes and pack things that are not allowed to be brought over the border. Check online at official government sites for a list of items that will not be allowed over the border. Make alternate plans or buy those items when you arrive in Canada.

You will be asked to provide registration and insurance papers for your vehicle. Make sure that all of your paperwork is up to date. Expired information will hold you back and may result in the inability to cross the border. Double check that your information will not be expiring during your trip either because that is trouble that you do not need and it can be easily prevented with preparation.

Border officials always ask who you are and what your business is in Canada. Be prepared to answer their checklist of questions. It should all be pretty straight forward. Don’t bring anything illegal to the border and you should have little to worry about. Whether it’s shopping, sight seeing or a certain landmark you wish to see be honest and the process will be over much faster.

If you come from a major city and you are not used to wildlife on the roads, watch carefully while in Canada. It is very common for deer to run out on the road, especially in rural zones during the night or in early morning. Moose and even the occasional bear can be seen on the road in Canada. But you sure don’t want to hit one of them. It can be a pretty nasty mess.

Always follow the traffic laws. If you don’t know them, look them up. Certain aspects might vary when compared to the state you are from. For example, seatbelts are mandatory all across Canada. Stay aware of rules and regulations and your time in Canada will be a treat.
