Most of us have people in our lives who we dearly love. Those who have helped us on this journey through the decades. Even those of you starting out, perhaps only in your second decade, could think of someone who has helped you greatly.

WHY NOT WRITE A SHORT STORY ON 'EM?

Don't get scared. Don't think that you can't do it. Perhaps you think that you can't write a short story. Look in the bookstore. Pick up a paperback. Most of these clowns can't write very well either but people are buying the stuff. I would say that content is more important than format.

You can do it. If you know the subject well, most of your work has been done for you.

Here are a few examples on how to write a short story or book on someone you like.

You could make it something like: " The Sayings Of Medford Bloom" etc. You could just list some of the sayings of your favorite person on page after page. It could be a riot! Make sure that you don't offend the person. You want the person to appreciate the gift, not get mad over the revelations. Here are a few generic sayings that might joggle your memory. Please Turn Out The Light In The Bathroom--Turn That TV Down--It's Time To Go To Sleep--Why Do I Have To Always Replace The Toilet Paper, etc.

Your short story could be a short history of the person-where he or she has been, what he or she has done. Their achievements, their children, their likes, their joys. See. It's almost neverending after you get started.

Or you could do something like, "So and So through the years." Get some early pictures and dates and make up pages of the persons progress here on planet Earth. You don't know, perhaps the person will enjoy the trip down memory lane. You'll have a laugh or two together.

For that special occasion-like 80th birthday, you could get a short paragraph from friends and loved ones and with their permission, copy the words into a book. You could use a title like, "What I Know About XXXXXX XXXXXXXXXX." See! It ain't as difficult as you thought when you started reading.

If you know someone, or if you are good in art, you could have drawings in the book. This makes for a special personal touch.

You could change the name of the person a little and make it a fiction book. Take the person to a magic land, put him or her in the future, make them hero of the world!

Now that I've got your attention, I'm sure that you can think of other ways to honor that specail person.

Once you're finished with the manuscript. Print is off on you computer printer. Put two pages on each 8X11" sheet. Go to a copy place and copy it on real nice paper. Ask the assistant for help if you have trouble getting the pages all in order. Most places will even bind your work for you for a fee.

Or you can copy each page on 8X11" copy and mount it like that. Have it bound at you local store.

Remember, no one else will be giving this gift to the person. There is no other gift like this in the world. This is something special from you to the person.
