  • Political Correctness, Argument and the New Orthodoxy

    Rating:

In an old Monty Python sketch, a character (played by Michael Palin, I believe) says something along the lines of,”an argument is a connected series of statements intending to establish a proposition not the automatic gainsaying of what the other person says”. On several discussion threads that I have participated in recently, I have noticed a tendency to automatically gainsay the proposition without examining the argument or the assumptions. Instead of showing that the assumptions are invalid or the logic of the argument is unsound, people prefer attack the motives of the writer or even defame his or her character.Read more…
  • Consequences of a Democratic Victory

    Rating:

As the mid-term election cycle comes full circle, it seems as though everyone in the country has all but conceded that the Democratic Party will win the House of Representatives, and possibly the Senate. Of course, in light of recent news stories about our elected officials in Washington, this is hardly surprising.Whether it's the continuing difficulties in Iraq, the George Allen racial slur, the Mark Foley email sex scandal, the investigation of Curt Weldon, or the guilty plea of Bob Ney, it seems that the GOP is doing everything it can to ensure that it becomes the minority party in the Congress after the November elections.Read more…

I never would have believed that my ten-year volunteer program, BE A WINNER IN LIFE, presented to incarcerated kids, in Juvenile Hall in San Diego, could be suspended because I used the word “GOD” in my book and presentation. The reason given for the suspension was they must enforce “separation of church and state”.How foolish to think our religious beliefs, or any of our freedoms are protected, because we live in America.Read more…
  • Obfuscation At Its Best

The Republican party along with the help of the media is spinning Mark Foley’s sexual activity with a minor into a political issue. The responsible thing for the Republicans to do is to provide information on Foley for his admitted sexual behavior with a minor and allow the police to conduct an investigation to ensure the young men and women who have been abused are given justice and those who are continuing to serve in the congressional page program are protected.Instead the Republicans and media have convoluted the issue to the degree that one could think it is a political issue rather than a capital crime.Read more…

The latest television campaign ad in the Virginia Senate race features two of the primary election approaches engineered by Democratic strategists for this November's mid-term contest: attacking the President's judgment and competence and appealing to the patriotism and dedication to service of current and former military members. These two campaign tactics, along with a third, newer strategy that just emerged in recent weeks, form the core of Howard Dean's plan for winning back the House and Senate after twelve years of Republican control. The first part of the campaign strategy centers on attacking the Republican candidate, Senator George Allen, by framing him as "guilty through association" for his support of the President and his policies.
