This leg of our journey across America is not going to be an easy one, although it is significantly easier than crossing the New Mexico Mountains. You see, coming into Flagstaff there is a 30 plus mile grade we will have to deal with as Flagstaff is right at 7,000 feet above sea level and our starting point at Four Corners is 5500 so needless to say we will be going up and down inclines on the plains all day. It is exactly 200 miles from Flagstaff to Laughlin NV and it is mostly downhill as Flagstaff is at 7000 feet and Laughlin is only 535 feet. So you might say this is a cyclists dream and yet there are some rolling hills with some steep grades on the way down to Laughlin NV and occasionally we will be giving back our decent numbers as we go. On the route across the flats of Middle America we leave on this day from Liberal Kansas, home of the Mid American Aircraft Museum and head for the high ground in the Mountains of New Mexico. So far we have done well and we are still alive, which potentially is a good sign, and we have cleared the Appalacian Mountains so the lower Rockies ought to be doable or one would hope. On this stage of our journey we start out on the top of the New Mexico Mountains at an elevation of 6679 in Dulce and we head down into Bloomfield, Farmington and Shiprock. Cycling in Mississippi is fun, as this is indeed a beautiful state. There are many wonderful routes one can take to cross the state and since the State is tall and thin you can really get a good long-distance 2-day ride out of it.
