Some parents are reticent to allow their children to take martial arts lessons in the fear that such training will make them more aggressive and combative. The truth is quite the opposite however--training in the martial arts actually teaches children restraint, respect, and self control, all of which are positive traits that parents attempt to instill on their own with varying degrees of success. Other positive benefits of martial arts training for children include increased physical fitness and the ability to defend themselves and others should a genuine need ever arise.Read more…Martial Arts Speaker Asks: Is That Angry Gas Station Hobo Really A Threat?
Tonight my dashboard emitted the shrill signal that says I was running on empty and I had to sidle up to a pump, and pronto.Fortunately, across from where I ate dinner there is a discount station that sells Union 76 gas, which I suppose is of fairly high quality because the company is so big. Before pulling in, I noticed a disheveled hobo was leaning against the posts that under gird the big 76 sign.Read more…Increasing Striking and Punching Power Using Dropping Energy

For students who attend our regular classes the information below will be nothing new. Many have heard me pontificate on these points at various times, however, I think it's important to share this information with others to hopefully help them focus their training in order to improve upon the quality of their workouts especially when they train on their own. This piece doesn't get into any specific training methods but merely highlights "philosophically" the importance of practicing the exercises on your own.Read more…Everything You Need To Know About Judo Uniforms
Since it was created in 1882 by Kano Jigoro of Japan, Judo has become one of the most popular martial arts in the world. This is one of the hottest topics up for debate in the martial arts community and quite frankly I don't think either side understands the other's point of view. The bulk of the issue stems from the many misconceptions of the two respective arts but more so the lack of understanding of Judo. It is funny that most people understand that BJJ was created when a Judoka taught a Brazilian the martial art of Judo but both sides fail to agree on how similar these martial arts are.Read more…Mixed Martial Arts

The stigmas associated with mixed martial arts are hard to shake but quite easy to dispel. No other martial art does this as effectively as the Israeli system of defensive tactics knows as Krav Maga.Read more…Fear Management
As a long time police trainer, I am of the opinion that many recruits begin their careers wanting to become the “warrior” that protects society from evil, only to become disillusioned at the first sign of serious resistance from a predator. I believe it may only be a symptom of growing up in a very “non-contact” world. Much of the violence that adolescents and teenagers experience comes in the form of interactive video games and countless hours glued to the television.Read more…

- How Would Today's Martial Artist Stack Up in a True Warrior Society? - By: Damian Ross
Not long ago the public was reintroduced to the Spartans and their warrior culture thanks to the film 300 based off of Frank Miller's graphic novel of the same name. This latest retelling of events that happen in Greece in 480 BC shouldn't be considered historically accurate; it was never intended to be that way. None the less, the real Spartans even without their "Hollywood Personas" still remain impressive to this day. They were truly a martial society. They understood that in order to remain free you must always be ready to fight. Love of country and each other along with disciplined training made them an unstoppable force. They claimed to be descended from Hercules, but they didn't just talk the talk they walked the walk. Ancient Sparta had no need for walls; it relied on its fighting men alone to protect her. - The Economics of Self Defense - By: Damian Ross

Thankfully the only damage was to my ego cause I totally wimped out in front of my buddies who were there... but more importantly I realized that I was totally unprepared to defend either myself or my family should the occasion arise. - MMA Digest - By: Rodger Hopkins

Like religion and politics, martial arts are not for a lack of it's zealots. Decide right now, you can either A. Continue to "sip the kool-aide" or B. Look to improve and learn. One criticism about our training material is that it is simple and could only work against some one who is untrained. What the hell does this mean, exactly? Does trained mean a woman who takes muay thai or the serial rapist, sociopath who has successfully applied his trade a dozen times? Does it apply to the mixed martial artists or the bag-man on a pick up?
